Jane Dee Hull - Governor of Arizona
JANE DEE HULL was born in Kansas City, Missouri. She received a bachelor's degree in elementary education from the University of Kansas at Lawrence in 1957 and did postgraduate work in political science and economics at Arizona State University from 1974 to 1979. She is a graduate of Josephson Ethics Institute and has served on the boards of numerous community and service organizations. She began her involvement in politics as a precinct committeeperson and deputy registrar in 1965 and subsequently worked on several campaigns
In 1979 she was elected to the Arizona House of Representatives. In 1989 she was chosen by her fellow representatives to serve as speaker of the house, the first woman to hold that position in Arizona. She served as speaker from 1989 to 1992. In 1993 she ran a successful campaign for secretary of state, becoming the second woman to hold that office and the first Republican since 1931. On September 5, 1997, she was sworn in as Governor to complete the remainder of Governor Fife Symington's term of office, and in November 1998 she was overwhelmingly elected to her first full term.
