Originally the Dakota, which means "ally," were called the Sioux.
This changed when the Chippewa gave them the name Nadouesse, which means "snake in the grass." Nadouesse was how the tribe was introduced to the French. The Voyageurs made Nadouesse plural, Nadouessesioux, then shortened the name to the last syllable, Sioux. However, the tribe now calls itself Dakota. |
