Set up 1-2-2 with the guards at the opposite foul lines and others at half court. Screen away for guards with one breaking to the ball avoiding the corners-screener holds around top of key. Break a deep man up the side and receive (you can run the baseline after a score to bring other wing up if needed). He looks for screening guard breaking middle. If not open and double teamed, he returns pass to inbounder. Guard who broke to receive pass should have rotated to weak side by now and you reverse the ball. These spots should always be occupied: safety, weak side, strong side, and middle flash. |

Breaking the 1-3-1 half court press involves patience and good passing. If the defense is overzealous they will try to trap before the ball is across half court. If they do this then they shouldn't be able to handle a cross court pass in the backcourt. If they are disciplined and wait try to bring the ball up the middle of the floor to avoid the sidelines and then look to make a pass to the top of the key. It is much tougher to trap in the middle of the floor. If you do attract a double team along the sidelines try to have set outlets for the ball handler. The deep corner is one spot and the extended top of the key is another. The 1-3-1 is most effective when teams get caught on the sidelines or just over half court. So if you can set up outlets in the middle of the floor then you will most likely handle the press. Also have your players attack the basket whenever possible. If the players are merely trying to avoid traps and not looking to score the defense also wins. |
